Production campaign 2017/18 completed at the sugar factory in Säkylä in Finland
The last Finnish beets of the 2017 season have just been processed at Nordzucker’s sugar factory in Finland. During a 62-day campaign, the factory has processed beet sugar around the clock. For the first time, also the beet reception was open 24 hours a day.
Weather conditions during the harvest were challenging in Finland, as there were heavy rains in some growing areas. At the start of the campaign there were some challenges to get the beet to the factory but the situation stabilized after the first few weeks. Harvest per hectare was about 37 tonnes and the average sugar beet content was 16.5 percent. The figures are close to five-year averages and the yield is good considering the circumstances.
Head of Production Finland, Sune Berghäll:
- The campaign went well technically, even though the high level of soil in the beets caused some difficulties in the reception and in the beet production. Otherwise, the quality of the beets remained good during the whole campaign. Investments this year have focused on increasing work safety and reliability, and with these actions the factory has been upgraded to meet today’s standards.
The Säkylä plant is the first plant in Nordzucker, where production season 2017/18 has ended. Nordzucker expects this year's season to end at all of its 13 sugar factories in late January 2018.
